How to Know If The Potatoes Are Ready to be Harvested

If you dig up the potatoes ahead of time, the skin on the tubers will not be able to be stored. If you harvest late, the potatoes will start to sprout, lose their nutritional value, and their taste will deteriorate. You will learn How to Know If The Potatoes Are Ready to be Harvested in the RunSun article.

What should I look for?
Most gardeners are used to harvesting potatoes when the tops are completely dry. Usually, the above-ground parts of the potatoes dry unevenly. This is because, in most cases, plants on individual farms are affected by epidemic mold. Therefore, it is not quite correct to harvest vegetables on this basis because the tops will dry out under the influence of the disease, rather than as a result of the natural aging of the plant. But there is still some truth to this.

According to experts, the shrubs affected by late blight (completely dry green matter) must first be dug up. If it is dry outside, this should be done immediately. Once the stems are dry, the disease will start to fall and affect the tubers.

Tubers affected by late blight are not suitable for storage, as they will rot quickly. Harvests of late blight plants should be collected and stored separately from healthy tubers. Use them first. Under no circumstances should you put it in the cellar or underground to avoid infecting other tubers, or worse, seed potatoes.

Very often, potatoes are the cause of late blight infections in tomatoes. Therefore, the distance between these crops on the site should be as large as possible. If there are individual plants in the garden bed or field with dry foliage but green stems, they should also receive close attention. First of all, such potatoes should be completely free from above-ground parts. This must be done 2-3 weeks before harvest.

The tops of late blight can be burned, treated with calcium superphosphate (2 kg / 10 l), whiteness (2 l / 10 l water), etc.

As for healthy bushes, the only correct time for harvesting potatoes is the time indicated by the manufacturer: 1.

  1. early varieties should be dug 80 – 100 days after germination
  2. mid-season – 100 days.
  3. mid-late season – 110 days.
  4. at the latest – 120 days.

Deviation from these terms is allowed only when it rains outside.

It is recommended to harvest potatoes only in dry weather. Therefore, potatoes must be dug at the right time for the particular variety. In diseased bushes, the tops must be pruned and neutralized within 2-3 weeks. First, collect tubers from late blight plants.
