Buying pots is not easy, as each plant prefers a specific shape and size of the container. Choose a pot according to the needs of your green pet and consider the biological cycle of the flower culture, the type of root system, and the growing conditions. So how do we make the right choice for different types of pots for plants?

The presence of trays is optional for pots, and the opposite is true for pots. Seeders are made of a wide range of materials, the choice of raw materials for making planting containers is limited – plastic, glass, ceramic, wood.

Types of flower pots
Planters are divided into two categories.
1. indoor use.
2. outdoor use.
The latter is made of durable materials that can easily withstand climatic precipitation and temperature fluctuations.

Novice florists do not agree with the concept of “flower pots” and “planters”. The first type of container is used for growing crops, while the second type of container is used as a decorative element into which a container with flowers is inserted.

1. Plastic
Advantages: lightweight, retains heat and moisture, durable

Such containers must have holes in the bottom so that excess water in the soil can flow unimpeded. Choose plastic pots only if flower cultivation conditions require high humidity.

2. Porcelain
Best suited for growing most flower species. This material allows the passage of air and moisture and regulates the flow of heat. So the roots do not dry out in hot microclimates and do not freeze in cooler microclimates.

Advantages: a natural material, air penetration, moisture retention, suitable for all crops, aesthetic appearance

It is better to choose untreated ceramics. Glaze clogs the walls of the pots and the root system suffers from a lack of air.

The minus of the material is brittleness. Also, ceramics are not suitable for the cultivation of epiphytes.

3. Glass planters
Glass containers are used exclusively for epiphytic species – orchids or crops grown using hydroponics. A great advantage is that you can see what is happening to the root system in such containers.

Some manufacturers produce glass planters with lighting. The original solution used if the light day is not enough to grow properly. The containers look spectacular and fit any design. They must have holes in the bottom.

4. Wooden planters
Products made of wood are used both indoors and outdoors. The material is treated with preservatives and then covered with varnish or paint. The circulation of air, moisture, and heat meets the requirements for the growth of flower crops. The color range is sparse and the surface is painted or decorated with carvings on the wood.

Advantages: natural materials, water permeable, breathable, moisture-retaining, durable

Suitable for indoor and outdoor applications.
The tree has no competitors by aesthetic qualities. The material is suitable for the cultivation of various flower crops except for epiphytes.

5. Metal
Containers made of iron are used for design purposes. They are used as containers for main planters made of plastic or ceramic. Non-standard shapes are forged from iron to suit the design project. Iron vases are not recommended for planting flowers because such containers do not allow moisture and air to pass through.

6. Concrete
Cement concrete mixture is used to cast flower pots for outdoor planting. The material is breathable and moisture permeable and crops feel good in the concrete “house”. However, one should be wary of low temperatures in the root system. A hole in the bottom is a must.

Conclusion: The choice of material depends on the use, the type of plants, and the cultural conditions. Ceramic or wood is the best choice, for epiphytes, glass.

Flowerpot information

1. Characteristics
The size, appearance, and design features of the planter are the main characteristics of the planter. The size is matched to the root system. In order not to make mistakes, follow a simple floral rule: the diameter of the new container should be 0.39-0.78inch (1-2 cm) larger than the previous one.

This way you can’t go wrong: when planting, the roots should not touch the wall of the product, but keep a distance of 2 cm from it.

The best shape is round, oval, or square. Pots with concave sides are not practical because the root system will be damaged when transplanting because it is not twisted and not soaked.

2. Design features
Original designs in the form of crosses, shoes, and C-shaped pots are designed for the shallow root system of plants. They are easy to transplant and are not damaged. Deep or elongated designs are designed for flowers with developed root systems.

Standard trays have an automatic irrigation system: a mechanism is built into the structure to supply water to the root system through the tray when the root ball dries out.

3. Equipment and accessories
Without exception, all planters are equipped with trays. Less commonly, the set includes supports for branches and vines – an option for glass pots for crops with attached biological species.

The stands are made of plastic, wood, glass, or metal. They are available in different designs.

Construction methods: straight, curved, spiral, rounded, in the form of a frame.

These are chosen according to the type of plant. For orchids, it is a straight or curved design, for loaches – arched or oval.

How to choose a planter?
First, decide what the pot will be used for – outdoors or at home. Then study the conditions for the growth and development of flower culture.

On this basis, choose the material for the dish. Plants that like moisture and heat are best grown in plastic pots. Epiphytic – in the glass. Cultures that can tolerate both heat and cold – in wood or ceramic.

Which is better?
It is impossible to say unequivocally that ceramic is better than plastic. It depends on the type of plant and the conditions of cultivation.
