Timely and effective watering is essential for all plants. It is a responsible and time-consuming process. Today, there are many automated gadgets that can make a gardener’s life easier. But almost all of them require uninterrupted power and a fixed water supply. So, nothing has yet replaced the common buy a watering can.

I. Purpose of use
Over time, everything here is simple and familiar. Garden and indoor watering can are used exclusively for this purpose.

1. Indoor watering can
Designed for watering houseplants and seedlings in pots or containers. Indoor spray pots are different in design and size from others. They are smaller (1 to 2-2.5 liters in volume). Their slender spouts are longer than their bodies – for watering in hard-to-reach places.
The designs are more diverse than the garden options. As for materials, almost all models are made of plastic. Less common are ceramic and metal, which are decorative in addition to their primary function. Particularly noteworthy are spray-painted steel watering can with aging effects.

2. Garden watering can
This view is the one that interests us the most. Garden watering cans are essential in small areas (flower beds, borders, greenhouses) and can also be used to water young trees and shrubs when they need to wet the trunk evenly.
The design is also designed for productive work in the garden. Garden sprayers have a wide filler spout with a special rim to prevent splashing. In some models, the neck is a separate funnel-like element.

3. Decorative squirt watering can
They perform unique aesthetic functions. They can decorate rooms, kitchens, gazebos, or balconies.
By the way, there is no need to buy decorative watering can: it is enough to “call up” old watering can that have already served their purpose. For example, the stencil painting workshop will help you turn galvanized watering can into beautiful accessories.

II. Materials
The material used to make the watering can is one of its main features.
The most popular ones for gardeners are metal and plastic. Which one is the best?

1. Metal watering can
Perhaps, many people have an old metal watering can in the barn, a kind of garden rarity. It is no longer so shiny and leaks in some places. What to do: buy the same again or choose plastic “beauty”?

If you choose metal (zinc, copper, stainless steel), then there are a few things to consider:
a. Metal watering can are stronger and therefore heavier than plastic watering can. For example, a spray bottle with a volume of 8-10 liters without water weighs about a kilogram, with water – the weight increases. Some people will find it difficult to carry such a vessel back and forth. Interesting: there is another point of view that casts doubt on the strength of metal watering can: if the structure is made by welding, then the strength of the product depends on the quality of the seams.
b. If not properly maintained, metal spouts, especially the bottom, can corrode.
c. The copper and zinc used to make the watering can are anticorrosive and fungicidal.
d. Metal watering can are more expensive. For example, the cost of a 4.5-liter model is about $12.

2. Plastic watering can
Plastic has long been a major competitor to metal in many industries. There are far more plastic watering can on store shelves and in shopping carts. How do they deserve to be loved by consumers?

Let’s look at their advantages.
a. Lightweight due to the low density of the material. Without water, a 10-liter spray bottle weighs only 450 grams.
b. Various designs and colors. Plastic is easy to paint, so there is no limit to the manufacturer’s imagination.
c. Construction without additional parts. Cast products are stronger and do not leak because there are no seams or joints on them.
d. Low price. An 8-liter plastic watering can cost about $3.

Important: Different plastics are used here, which affects the price. If you come across a very cheap model, do not boast. Check the quality of the plastic (of course, chemical analysis is not feasible, we will limit ourselves to everyday knowledge). If the surface looks cloudy and streaked in the light, feel free to put the product back in place – this is recycled plastic. It won’t last long.

Interesting: Products made from modern polymers are more resistant to elements and corrosion.

Important: Plastic spray bottles must be protected from frost and direct sunlight to avoid deformation.

III. Volume
The capacity of the watering can is chosen according to the needs and physical ability of the gardener. Each person can lift and bear different weights. It is believed that the best choice for women – a 5-6 liter (or even less) watering can, and for men – a 10-13 liter watering can.
There is no doubt about the “benefits” of larger volumes – they require less frequent filling. With the smaller ones, you will have to run around.
Tip: It is better to have several different models: for “mass” watering – larger, for delicate work in beds, sprouts, etc. – Smaller. By the way, this applies not only to volume but also to all other parameters. In the big summer, everything will come in handy sooner or later.

IV. Nozzles
Do we need nozzles or not, and if so, what kind of nozzles? – This is a fairly common question. The answer depends on where the equipment will be used. Need a powerful jet (for example, when watering shrubs) – no nozzle is not needed. Need a small dispersed stream of water that will not wash away the soil and will not damage the plants (for example, for young plants) – choose a nozzle “shower” with an orifice diameter of 0.8 to 1.5 mm.

Important:
a. Secure the nozzles before use. If they are “ripped off” while watering, the dropped nozzles may damage the plants.
b. Try to choose nozzles with removable filters because they are easy to clean.
c. It doesn’t hurt to stock up on replacement nozzles, as they can be easily lost.

What else to consider when choosing
a. Any watering that can use in the garden must be sturdy, with a wide neck and a spout that extends to the bottom.
b. If you intend to dilute nutrients in the watering can, it is worth buying a model with measured portions to maintain the “recipe”.
c. For spraying plants, you only need a watering can with a sprayer.

But perhaps the most important advice for those who choose a watering can is: “Choose your own watering can!” This is indeed true. We all have different tastes, and we don’t always like the same plants. Therefore, and watering cans will vary. So what model do you prefer?
