History of the bathroom

Bathroom accessory sets are not a luxury, they are a necessity. It’s hard to imagine yourself in the bathroom without a mirror, toothbrush, soap dish, or towel, not to mention the tub itself, the faucet, and the storage cabinet.

A poll conducted by Taylor Nelson Sofres in the United States yielded unexpected results. The United States voted unanimously that the toothbrush was the greatest invention of mankind.

The oldest baths discovered by archaeologists in India are over 5,000 years old

The concern for bodily cleanliness has always had a special significance in Eastern cultures. Excavations in ancient cities prove that in ancient India every household had a bathtub made of ceramic materials, very similar in appearance to modern models.

In ancient Egypt, the bathing culture was so developed that all inhabitants had free access to public bathing facilities. The clay turrets were filled with water from the Nile River. When the river was flooded, special canals were used

In ancient Rome, the use of bathtubs reached a peak of popularity. Personal baths, swimming pools, and public baths were masterpieces of engineering. Water was heated to just the right temperature. Precious metals were used for taps, and marble armchairs and benches were probably the first bathroom furniture.

Centuries have passed, but the shape of the bowls and the materials used to make the baths have changed little. Metal, stone, and ceramics have been replaced by man-made materials, but the ingenuity of the ancients is hard to beat.

In northern homes, the bathtub became an added convenience more than a century ago. in 1871, a French traveler visited England and described his Victorian-style bedroom.

On a special table were kettled for the morning ritual, one of which was hot water poured in by the servants. There were also porcelain bowls for toothbrushes, soap dishes, and a container for water on the dresser, next to a cup.

The room had “a large, light-colored zinc bath for morning bathing”. In the morning, servants brought “a large basin of hot water and a soft, fluffy towel” to the room.
From the 1860s onwards, plumbing systems were introduced and the need to deliver water by hand became a thing of the past. In the mid-nineteenth century, self-heating baths were introduced, where the water was heated by a special burner invented by Robert William Benson.

The fuel used was gas, which was particularly rich in oxygen. However, the “gas bath” had its drawbacks. The water was not heated immediately and the burner did not always operate reliably.

Lord Hamilton recalled, “When you wanted a hot bath, the water was at best a little hot. It snorted first, as if gushing from the underworld, then it ran off with dead earwigs and flies in a rusty creak.

In 1874, a certain Mr. Meng patented the Geyser boiler, which did a better and faster job of heating water.

How did the first bathroom accessory set come about?

The bathroom gradually changed. The modest space began to look like a pleasant corner decorated in the spirit of the times.

The invention of the bathroom hook may not have been difficult, so no one in history knows exactly how it came to be. The only thing we know is that it was invented in France in the 17th century.

But hanging bathroom accessories sets did not appear immediately. At first, the bathroom looked very modest. Apart from the table and mirror, there was no special furniture.

Linley Sambourne installed one of the first bathrooms in a separate room in his own house in London. The taps only supplied cold water. Since this bathroom was also used by the Englishman to display his photos, he came up with the idea of a convenient folding shelf.

The history of bathroom accessory sets

Today, a toothbrush is a must-have in a bathroom set. Oral hygiene problems have plagued mankind since ancient times, and their solutions have been less than ideal.

Archaeologists have concluded that a primitive toothbrush left small indentations in the teeth of ancient people. It was a bunch of grass that was used to remove plaque from the teeth.

The next version of the toothbrush was a wooden stick with fiber on one end and a sharp end on the other. The sharp end removes food debris and the fibrous end removes plaque. Toothpicks are made of wood containing essential oils to disinfect the mouth.

In Africa, branches of the genus Salvador are still used, while in the American states, the indigenous Indians used white elm. It was only a few hundred years later that tools similar to modern toothbrushes appeared.

It was not until 1498 in China that the bristles of the Siberian wild boar were attached to a bamboo handle. These brushes were used without toothpaste or tooth powder. In villages, farmers would rub birch charcoal on their teeth, which was excellent for whitening them and perhaps the most effective way to clean them.

In 1770, a London ragpicker, William Edis, was imprisoned and in his spare time made the first toothbrush in European history from cow bones and pig bristles. He probably got the idea in prison, but put it into practice only after his release.

In the first half of the 13th century, in Rome, they began blowing spheres out of glass and filling them with tin. The finished product was broken and the pieces were used as mirrors. The reflection in such a mirror was far from perfect, but it was much more effective than looking at a polished metal plate.

During the reign of Louis XIV, such mirrors came into widespread use. The Sun King established the Manufacture Saint-Gobain to produce mirrors, employing Venetian artisans. The result was a drop in the price of mirrors.
